In the second round of its Clean School Bus Program funding, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in January announced awards of $965 million for zero-emission and low-emission school bus purchases. Of the total, $963 million will pay for 2,675 new EVs and $1.8 million will go toward 62 propane school buses.

The program provides $5 billion from 2022-26 to replace existing school buses. Nearly half a million diesel buses dominate the current U.S. fleet. To date, the program has awarded more than $1.8 billion to replace 5,094 buses in 638 school districts nationwide, according to the EPA website.

Propane buses cost about one-third as much as electric buses, which also require more extensive and expensive infrastructure for charging stations, electrical service upgrades and more. That same total award could have replaced 32,104 diesels with propane buses, based on the $30,000 incentive provided by the program.

When considering well-to-wheel emissions, the 2,675 diesel buses the grant replaced with electric will reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by just 775 metric tons per year and carbon dioxide emissions by only 41,684 metric tons. If the funds had gone toward all propane buses to replace diesel, it would have reduced nearly 11 times the amount of NOx emissions and four times the amount of carbon dioxide emissions, according to the Propane Education & Research Council.

Power Progress magazine recently featured the success of propane Autogas in a $1 million research pilot project by the Denver Metro Clean Cities Coalition to evaluate propane Autogas as an alternative to diesel fuel for delivery trucks.

Funded by the U.S. Dept. of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy, the project entitled, “Delivering Clean Air in Denver: Propane Trucks and Infrastructure in Mail Delivery Application,” saw U.S. mail logistics contractor Hi Pro, Inc. add five Class 6 straight box propane Autogas delivery trucks to its Denver fleet.

Comparing duty cycles, emissions and operating costs of those propane autogas vehicles to diesel units, the study found the propane fuel costs on an average per-mile basis were 29% less than diesel.
