“You turn the CGI on in a clear area and then you walk slowly to where there might be gas and it gives you readings,” Herron said. “It’s almost as essential as a fire truck would be. Both protect lives. It’s a good thing to have for any fire department.”

Mike Walters, vice president of safety and fleet for Superior Energy Systems, joined Herron at the Columbia Township Fire Department CGI presentation along with Derek Rimko, vice president of operations.

“Education is everything,” Walters said of the opportunity propane marketers have to share a CGI with a local fire department. “As an industry, we should be proactive. It’s important for the fire service to know that we’re here to help you and we’re willing to teach you about propane.”

Optimus Group’s propane refueling station consists of a 30,000-gallon tank along with four PRO-Vend 2000 propane autogas dispensers from Superior Energy Systems (SES). There is a separate dispenser hose to fill propane cylinders for applications like forklifts, because Optimus uses its own fleet to deliver those containers to a wide slate of customers.

Optimus began the propane refueling infrastructure project with a single 1,000-gallon propane tank and dispenser on a skid, provided by SES. That evolved into the current station. The overall infrastructure design allows for up to six 30,000-gallon tanks.
